The countdown to Africa’s biggest international table tennis spectacle officially began today with the WTT Contender Lagos 2025 Press Conference, held at the iconic Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall inside the Teslim Balogun Stadium. With qualifying matches already underway, players, organizers, and media gathered to launch what promises to be the most competitive WTT event yet hosted on African soil.
Oshodi: “Lagos is now a global table tennis destination”
Speaking at the press briefing, Barr. Wahid Enitan Oshodi, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Vice President ITTF and President of the African Table Tennis Federation, expressed confidence in the city’s growing status as a world-class host.
This event has firmly placed Lagos on the global table tennis map, thanks to the passionate support of our fans. It’s become one of the most exciting stops on the WTT Contender circuit,” Oshodi said.
He added that WTT Contender Lagos is not just a sporting event, but part of Nigeria’s broader mission to grow the sport across the continent and inspire young talent.
“We’re proud to welcome 126 players from across the world, and even prouder that Lagos has earned a reputation as a WTT tour highlight. This tournament gives African players a platform to challenge the best, right here on home ground,” Oshodi stated.
He expressed hope for continued support from the Lagos State Government and other partners to sustain the event’s growth.
Event Supervisor Maher Ben Ahmed noted that this year’s edition features players from Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Africa—underscoring the tournament’s global appeal.
“The presence of athletes from four continents is a testament to the tournament’s rising popularity. WTT Contender Lagos is now one of the most anticipated events in the WTT Series,” he said.
Event Director Kweku Tandoh reaffirmed the LOC’s commitment to meeting WTT’s expectations, promising further growth in both scale and quality.
High Stakes: $100,000 and 400 Ranking Points
This year’s event boasts a prize pool of $100,000, with champions in men’s and women’s singles and doubles earning 400 WTT ranking points—the highest available outside the WTT Champions tier.
What’s Ahead

Qualifying rounds began Tuesday , July 22, with several African hopefuls battling for main-draw places.

The main draw begins Tuesday, July 24, featuring a blend of international WTT regulars, regional champions, and rising stars.
