Team Nigeria kicked off their campaign at the ongoing World Table Tennis Championships Finals in Doha with a day full of drama, hope, and determination.
In the men’s singles Round of 128, African table tennis legend Aruna Quadri delivered a commanding performance, sweeping Brazil’s Vitor Ishiy 4-0 (11-9, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9). Aruna’s dominant start sets the tone for Nigeria’s challenge on the global stage, as he advances confidently into the next round.
On the women’s side, Hope Udoaka faced a tough challenge and bowed out after a straight-set loss to Giulia Takahashi of Brazil. Despite the 0-4 defeat, the experience gained at this level will be vital for Udoaka’s growth.
In the men’s doubles Round of 64, Nigeria’s rising stars Abdulbasit Abulfatai and Muizz Adegoke showed promise but couldn’t overcome the experienced Hong Kong, China pair Chan Baldwin and Wong Chun Ting. The young duo lost the match but left with invaluable exposure in their debut world appearance.
There was reason to cheer in the mixed doubles, where Olajide Omotayo and Ayoola pulled off a surprise upset over Egypt’s Mahmoud Helmy and Hend Fathy. Their impressive teamwork and composure earned them a memorable win and a place in the next round.
Looking ahead, all eyes turn to more Nigerian stars who are yet to begin their singles campaigns. Nigeria’s No. 2 male player Olajide Omotayo will face Leonardo Iizuka (Brazil) in the Round of 128, hoping to follow in Aruna’s winning footsteps. Youngster Muizz Adegoke, competing in his first world championships, takes on Adrien Rassenfosse (Belgium), while another debutant Matthew Kuti is set to face Mateusz Kulesza of Poland.
In the women’s singles, Fatimo Bello, Nigeria’s top-ranked female player, has a tough opener against India’s Manika Batra, while Ajoke Ojomu is slated to play Sally Moyland of Malaysia.
With experience, youth, and surprises already unfolding, Team Nigeria is off to a spirited start in Doha.
