At the 2026 ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals London 2026, China once again proved why they remain the world’s dominant table tennis nation, winning both the men’s and women’s team titles after dramatic finals against Japan.
The road to glory, however, was far from easy for the Chinese men’s team. Drawn into a brutal Group 1 alongside Sweden, South Korea, and host nation England, China struggled early in the tournament. They suffered a 3-1 defeat to South Korea and later fell 3-2 to Sweden, finishing only third in the group — a rare setback that shocked fans around the world.
Despite the difficult start, China showed the mentality of champions in the knockout stage. The team fought through intense matches before reaching the final, where they defeated Japan to capture the men’s crown in front of a packed London crowd.
China’s women’s team looked more composed throughout the tournament but still faced strong resistance from Japan in the final. After several thrilling rallies and dramatic momentum swings, China secured another victory to complete a historic double championship.
One of the biggest surprises of the tournament came from rising French star Cotton Flavien. The young player stunned spectators by defeating Brazil’s Hugo Calderano 3-0 in one of the event’s most memorable upsets. His fearless attacking style and calm performance against one of the world’s best players announced him as a future star of international table tennis.
The London 2026 championships will be remembered not only for China’s resilience and dominance, but also for the emergence of a new generation ready to challenge the sport’s traditional powers.
